Afshin got his PhD in Chemistry in 2013 from Tarbiat Modares University (TMU), Tehran, Iran, working on synthesis of nanostructured transition metal oxides and their employment as electrode materials for energy storage applications. After graduation, he pursued his studies at TMU as a postdoctoral researcher for one year on investigation of highly-ordered porosity effect on electrochemical performance of metal oxide electrodes. In Sep. 2014, he joined Electrochemical Processes Unit in IMDEA Energía, Madrid, Spain as a co-funded Marie-Curie postdoctoral fellow where he practiced the fabrication of various nanostructures (e.g. mixed transition metal oxides and their composites with carbons including graphene and CNT fibers) and their application in a variety of energy storage-related technologies such as hybrid supercapacitor-batteries, heterogeneous electrocatalysis and rechargeable Zn-air batteries. During his 4-year stay in IMDEA he had the opportunity to co-supervise a PhD thesis and be involved in different projects related to fabrication of small pouch-cell supercapacitor prototypes and synchrotron-based studies on phase changes of oxides. As result of his research, he published > 15 articles (10 as the first author and more than 50% as corresponding author) in international peer-reviewed journals with an HI > 10.

In Oct. 2018, he joined as a postdoctoral researcher to CIC energigune to employ advanced physical characterizations (e.g. Small Angle X-ray Scattering or SAXS) for tuning the electrochemical properties of carbonaceous materials for electrochemical energy storage.
